Working from home means nobody watches you work, and that is exactly why focus is hard. The house, the phone, the fridge and the endless scroll are all within reach, and willpower alone is a poor defence. The Pomodoro Technique is the simplest system that actually works, and it needs nothing more than a timer.

The method was developed in the 1980s by Francesco Cirillo, who used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer, hence the name. The rules are simple: pick one task, set a timer for 25 minutes, work on that task and nothing else until the timer rings, then take a 5-minute break. After four pomodoros, take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. That is the whole system, and its power is in its simplicity.

The 25-minute block works because it is short enough to start and long enough to make progress. Starting is the hardest part of any task, and a 25-minute commitment feels small enough to begin. The break is not a reward for finishing, it is part of the method: it lets your brain consolidate what you just did and prevents the slow fade in attention that ruins long work sessions. If you are interrupted during a pomodoro, note the interruption and return to the task; if the interruption is urgent, end the pomodoro and start a new one.

For remote workers, the technique solves two specific problems. First, it creates a boundary between work and home, because a timer running means you are at work and a timer off means you are not. Second, it makes your day measurable: count your completed pomodoros and you know exactly how much focused work you did, which is more honest than counting hours at a desk. Most people manage 8 to 12 pomodoros in a good day, which is 4 to 6 hours of real focused work, and that is more than most office workers achieve.

Adapt the timings to your work. Deep work such as writing or coding often suits 50-minute blocks with 10-minute breaks, while shallow work such as email suits the classic 25 and 5. Use a simple timer app, or a physical timer if you want to keep your phone in another room, and track your pomodoros on paper for a week. The data will show you when you focus best, which tasks eat your time, and how much you actually get done. That is the real value of the technique: not the timer, but the record of your attention.
