Portugal's D8 visa, often called the digital nomad visa, allows remote workers earning from outside Portugal to live in the country, and it has become one of Europe's most sought-after routes thanks to Portugal's climate, safety, English proficiency, and relatively affordable cities outside Lisbon. It is also one of the more demanding nomad visas in Europe, with an income threshold tied to the Portuguese minimum wage and a document list that rewards careful preparation. Understanding the requirements before you apply saves months of delays.

As with any visa guide, verify current rules with the Portuguese consulate or immigration authority before applying, since thresholds and procedures are updated periodically and consulates interpret requirements differently. This guide summarises the framework as commonly reported and the practical steps applicants typically follow; it is not legal advice, and complex cases benefit from an immigration lawyer.

The D8 generally requires proof of remote income at a multiple of the Portuguese minimum wage, commonly reported as four times the minimum monthly wage, which puts the threshold at a level that excludes lower earners but remains accessible to established remote workers and freelancers. Applicants typically show income over recent months through contracts, payslips, invoices, or bank statements, and the income must come from outside Portugal; local Portuguese employment is a different route entirely.

A typical application file includes a valid passport, proof of remote income, a Portuguese tax number, known as a NIF, proof of accommodation in Portugal, health insurance, a criminal record certificate, and a statement of intent. Obtaining the NIF and opening a Portuguese bank account often requires a local representative or a visit, and documents from abroad usually need apostilles and translations, which add weeks if not planned early.

Tax is the question to plan before arrival, not after: becoming resident in Portugal generally brings Portuguese tax obligations on worldwide income, and the previous non-habitual resident regime that attracted many nomads has changed significantly, so current rules need professional advice for your situation. Double taxation treaties may help, but they do not remove filing obligations, and freelancers face additional registration and social security considerations.

A final practical tip is to start learning basic Portuguese before you arrive, even if your work is entirely in English. Everyday tasks like dealing with landlords, utilities, and local offices go much more smoothly with a few phrases, and the effort is noticed and appreciated by the people you will rely on during your first months in the country.
