Estonia launched its digital nomad visa in 2020, and it remains one of the clearest routes into Europe for remote workers. The visa lets you live in Estonia for up to 12 months while working remotely for an employer or clients based outside the country, and it can also serve as a path to a longer stay.
The income requirement is 4,500 euros a month before tax, proved over the six months before you apply. That is higher than many other nomad visas, and it is the main filter. You must also show that your work is genuinely remote: an employment contract with a foreign employer, a service contract with foreign clients, or evidence that you run a business registered outside Estonia.
You apply at an Estonian embassy or consulate in your country of residence. The documents include a completed application form, a valid passport, a passport photo, proof of income for the last six months, your employment or client contracts, and health insurance covering your stay. The state fee is 100 euros for a long-stay visa, and processing typically takes up to 30 days, so apply well before your planned departure.
Estonia is a practical choice for nomads who want a proper base in Europe. The country is famously digital, with e-services for almost everything, fast internet, and a compact capital, Tallinn, where the startup scene is large for the size of the city. English is widely spoken, and the country is in the Schengen Area, so the visa also gives you travel access across Europe, within the usual 90-in-180-day limits for the Schengen zone as a whole.
There are two routes worth knowing. The digital nomad visa is a long-stay D visa for up to a year, and there is also a separate digital nomad residence permit for those who want to stay longer and can meet the conditions. If you plan to stay beyond a year, research the permit route early, because the requirements and the timeline are different. As with any visa, confirm the current rules with the Estonian embassy before applying, because fees and thresholds change.
