Working remotely from abroad sounds expensive, but the tax questions matter more than the rent. Get the tax basics wrong and a cheap destination becomes an expensive problem.

The key concept is tax residence: the country that considers you resident for tax purposes, usually based on how many days you spend there. Spending more than around 183 days in a year in one country can make you tax resident there.

Double taxation treaties help by letting you credit tax paid in one country against tax owed in another, but filing obligations can remain in both countries. If you are employed, your employer's payroll setup matters too.

For freelancers, the basics are records and separation. Keep business and personal finances apart, keep invoices and expense records, and set aside a percentage of every payment for tax.

Know when to hire a professional. If your situation involves two countries, a company, or significant income, a cross-border tax adviser is not a luxury — it is the cost of doing this legally.

Before you move, run a short checklist: confirm your home country's rules for leaving, check the destination's day-count and visa tax rules, tell your employer or clients, arrange health insurance, and track days, income, and expenses.
